Coated Abrasives: Sanding Discs, Sanding Belts, Flap Discs & Sandpaper Rolls for Metal and Wood
Coated abrasives are cutting tools made by bonding a layer of abrasive grain - aluminum oxide, zirconia alumina, ceramic, or silicon carbide - to a flexible backing of paper, cloth, film, or fiber. Because the backing flexes, coated abrasives are used for sanding, blending, deburring, and finishing on metal, wood, composite, and plastic surfaces, unlike bonded abrasives (grinding/cut-off wheels), which are rigid and used for aggressive stock removal.
Elevated Industrial Solutions stocks over 2,000 coated abrasive products from 3M, Uneeda Enterprizes, ARC Abrasives, VSM Abrasives, Hermes Abrasives, and Mirka - including discs, belts, rolls, and sheets in grits from coarse (36–60) through ultra-fine (800–2000+) for metal fabrication, woodworking, countertop fabrication, and aerospace finishing.
Shop Coated Abrasives by Type
- Flap Discs - for blending welds and stock removal on angle grinders
- Sanding Discs - PSA, hook-and-loop, and film discs for orbital and rotary sanders
- Sanding Belts - for belt sanders and stationary finishing lines
- Sandpaper & Shop Rolls - cloth and paper rolls for hand sanding and custom cutting
- Surface Conditioning Discs - non-woven discs for finishing and blending without changing part geometry (see also Non-Woven Abrasives)

How to Choose the Right Coated Abrasive
Three variables determine performance: grain type, grit size, and backing.
| Grain Type | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum Oxide | General-purpose metal & wood sanding | Most economical, good all-around choice |
| Zirconia Alumina | Heavy stock removal on steel & stainless | Self-sharpening, longer life under heavy pressure |
| Ceramic Alumina | Aggressive grinding, high-pressure applications | Fastest cut rate, best for tough alloys (e.g. 3M Cubitron) |
| Silicon Carbide | Non-ferrous metal, glass, stone, composites | Sharp, friable grain for cool-cutting on hard/brittle materials |
Grit Guide

Coated Abrasives FAQs
What's the difference between coated and bonded abrasives?
Coated abrasives bond a layer of grain to a flexible backing (paper, cloth, or film) and are used for sanding and finishing. Bonded abrasives - like grinding and cut-off wheels - mix grain into a solid, rigid bonding agent and are used for aggressive grinding and cutting. See our Bonded Abrasives collection for grinding and cut-off wheels.
What grit sandpaper should I use for metal prep before painting?
For most metal paint prep, start at 80–120 grit to remove rust and old coatings, then move to 180–220 grit for a smooth, paint-ready surface. Finer grits (320+) are used only for high-gloss or automotive-grade finishes.
What's the difference between zirconia and ceramic abrasive grain?
Zirconia alumina is self-sharpening and well-suited to heavy-pressure grinding on steel and stainless steel. Ceramic alumina cuts faster and lasts longer under the same conditions, making it the better choice for high-volume production grinding, though it typically costs more per disc.
Do you offer Net 30 terms on coated abrasives orders?
Yes. Registered business accounts can apply for Net 30 payment terms, plus quick reordering and account-specific pricing. Call 1-855-353-8833 or create a business account to get started.
Can I get bulk or case pricing on sanding discs and belts?
Yes - most coated abrasive SKUs are available in bulk case quantities with volume pricing. Contact our team for a quote on high-volume or recurring orders.
